It wasn’t about reaction times or twitch gaming - although I first thought that. You had to fail repeatedly to learn and memorize the correct sequence, so you’d know that 3 turtle dives down the track you wouldn’t be stranded on the wrong side with nowhere to go. 

To succeed you’d queue the moves for your hands to execute while your attention was focused on recognizing sequences and recalling the correct response. If you were running dry on sequenced responses you’d have to apply some simple rules and freestyle. 

That was the fun bit.

And like most Nintendo games, a reasonably complete metaphor for life.
